The Forest Riders are the elite heavy cavalry of the Feral Elves — the closest thing the deep wood has to royalty, and the heaviest charge the lowland armies of the kingdoms of men have ever had to brace against. They ride bare-chested above the waist by tradition and by tactical doctrine: the fur, horns, and crowned helms above lend them the imposing silhouette of heavy cavalry, while the unarmored torso keeps them agile in the saddle, free to twist, to strike, to ride low across the neck of the mount when the spears come up to meet them. Their mounts are not horses in any sense the southern world would understand. The Forest Horses are mystical creatures of the deep wood — older, larger, smarter, and bonded to their riders in ways the lowland cavalry doctrine cannot explain or replicate. Each one is born in the deep groves, raised among the trees, and ridden only by the elven warrior whose bond it has chosen to accept. Together rider and Forest Horse form a single weapon — cavalry spear in one hand for the charge, hand weapon in the other for what comes after, fur cloaks streaming behind them, antlered and horned helms catching the dappled light of the forest canopy as they break through a treeline that should not have been passable for horses at all. This is the unit that turns a defensive line into a memory. This is the elite charge that decides battles.
