Ask a question
The wolves of the scorched steppe do not bond easily. They do not bond with chaos-dwarves at all. The hobgoblin who learns to ride one has done something the bull-god priesthood will quietly, grudgingly respect for the rest of his life.
The Hobgoblin Hero on Wolf is the mounted captain of the Hobgoblin auxiliary forces — the hobgoblin warrior who came up out of the warbands fast and rough enough to earn his own dire wolf mount, and the only kind of hobgoblin officer the Sons of Marduk command structure has ever bothered to remember by name. Hobgoblins are the disposable shock troops of the Marduk armies — fast, vicious, expendable, fielded by the thousand and never quite trusted by the chaos-dwarven priesthood who keeps them on retainer. But every now and then one rises. One hobgoblin out of every ten thousand catches the wolf-bond, breaks the unspoken ceiling, claims a wolf of his own from the steppes, and rides back into the war-camp with something the Marduk officers cannot ignore: a real cavalry asset, given freely, by a hobgoblin who refused to be field-cannon-fodder. This is that hobgoblin. He rides low and forward on the wolf's neck, shield slung across his back, blade in his hand, hide-armor torn and re-stitched and torn again, his teeth filed to the points of his clan and his eyes already on the gap in the enemy line that his wolf has scented before he has. The wolf itself is no kennel-bred mount. The wolf is a dire-blooded steppe predator that chose this rider, and the bond between them is older than the alliance the Sons of Marduk have only recently been forced to take seriously.
