They are not the elite. They are not the favored. They are the third tier of the Marduk armies, raised on the scorched steppes, conscripted out of every clan that owes the priesthood a blood-debt, and pushed forward in deep formations with one job and one job only — present the spears, hold the line, die in good order. And they do it. Not gladly, but reliably. Each spearman wears the patched hide-and-mail of his clan, his teeth filed to the points of his tribe, his shield notched with the wear of a unit that has been in the field longer than the captain who currently commands it. The spears themselves are the long-shafted, iron-tipped, leveled-across-the-front-rank kind that have served the steppe-tribes for a thousand years — simple weapons, brutally effective when held in numbers, the original answer to the question of how to stop cavalry without having any cavalry of your own. They do not break easily. That is the thing the southern armies keep forgetting.
