Ask a question
The bolt arrives before the sound of the release. That is the only warning the line will get, and by the time the captains understand what has happened, the second crewman is already cranking the windlass for the next shot. The Hobgoblin Ballista is the bolt-throwing artillery of the Sons of Marduk hobgoblin auxiliary — a stripped-down, brutally efficient field piece served by a two-man crew who have forgotten how to do anything else with their lives. They wake up next to the machine. They eat next to the machine. They sleep under its frame at night during the long campaign marches, the way other soldiers sleep next to their dogs. And they know it — every tension-creak in the torsion cables, every quirk of the spring-arm, every degree of windage drift the iron-tipped bolts pick up at long range. The ballista itself is a Mesopotamian-influenced siege weapon — heavy timber frame, iron-banded torsion springs, the long deadly shaft of an iron-tipped bolt resting in the firing channel, ready. The crew is two: one master gunner whose job is the aim, the elevation, the moment of release; one loader whose entire purpose in life is to keep the next bolt ready and the windlass cranked. Both of them wear the patched hide-and-iron of the hobgoblin warband, both of them carry the scars of a thousand campaigns served crouching behind the timber frame while the enemy archers tried to find them, both of them have stopped flinching at incoming arrows because they have lived through too many of them to bother. They do not aim at lines. They aim at officers. They aim at war-beasts. They aim at the singular targets that, when removed, make the rest of the enemy formation lose composure — and the Marduk priesthood pays them in good copper and better food because the priesthood understands exactly how much one well-placed bolt is worth in the order of battle. Designed by Highlands Miniatures and printed in Texas by Border3D LLC on an Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra 12K machine — every torsion cable strand, every iron bolt-tip facet, every patched hide stitch on the crew rendered at maximum resolution in high-fidelity photopolymer resin.
