The Hobgoblin Riders are the wolf-cavalry of the Sons of Marduk hobgoblin auxiliary — the fast-moving, fast-striking, bow-or-blade flanking force that hits the parts of the enemy line the heavy chaos-dwarven infantry cannot reach in time. Where the Hobgoblin Hero rides his single bonded wolf alone, the Hobgoblin Riders ride in packs — three, five, ten, the whole regiment moving as a single howling formation across the scorched steppes of the Marduk world. Their mounts are not the same dire-bonded wolves of the heroes. The riders ride the brass-fanged war beasts of the wolf-pens — selectively-bred steppe predators with iron temperaments and the willingness to charge straight at a shield-wall as long as their rider goes with them. Each rider wears the segmented armor of the hobgoblin cavalry-corps, his face filed and painted in the colors of his clan, his weapons fitted to his role: hand-weapon riders carry the curved blade of close-combat flanking work, bow-riders carry the recurved horn-bow of the horse-archer tradition, the arrows fletched with the feathers of carrion birds and the heads tipped in the bone-iron of the steppe forges. The captain at the head of the unit raises the banner of his clan. The musician howls the change-of-pace signals across the formation. The bannerman carries the standard the riders will rally to if they need to break and reform mid-charge. And the wolves run as one — paws striking the ground in unsettling unison, jaws open, brass-tipped fangs catching the light, the formation moving at the speed of a forest fire across grass. This is the cavalry of the steppes. This is the unit that has terrorized the southern kingdoms since the first wolf-pens were dug.
