The Hobgoblin Backstabbers are the shadow-blades of the Sons of Marduk hobgoblin auxiliary — the assassins, the throat-cutters, the dark operatives who slip in from the wrong angle and resolve problems the formal ranks of the army cannot reach. They are not the soldiers the Marduk priesthood marches in parade. They are the ones the priesthood quietly sends in three days before the formal engagement, to thin the ranks, to assassinate the supply captains, to make sure the enemy general wakes up with one of his own bannermen missing and a knife stuck in the bed-post where the bannerman used to sleep. Each backstabber wears the dark cloth-and-leather of the night-trade — no shining helm, no battle-banner, no proud heraldry. Their armor is patched, dyed in soot, sewn flat against the body so it does not catch on anything in the dark. They carry two blades each — the long blade for the killing reach, the short blade for the certain finish — and they hold them in the low crawl-stance of the assassin who has learned that the most dangerous angle of attack is the one that comes up from below the enemy's expected line of sight. Their faces are wrapped. Their teeth are filed. Their eyes do the work their voices used to do. They do not break formation because they have never been in one. They simply spread out across the field at dusk and reappear, one by one, behind the parts of the enemy army that the captains had assumed were safe. Hobgoblins, in the order of the Sons of Marduk, are the disposable ranks — but the backstabbers are the exception. They are the ones the priesthood pays well. They are the ones the priesthood asks for by name.
