The Hobgoblin Archers are the ranged infantry of the Sons of Marduk hobgoblin auxiliary — the long-range answer the steppes have given to the southern question of how to handle armored cavalry, armored infantry, and any other formation that thinks it can close the distance unscathed. They are the rain that precedes the storm. They are the volley that opens every Marduk engagement, the steady drumbeat of arrow-fall that thins the enemy ranks before the heavy chaos-dwarven infantry has even committed to the charge. Each archer wears the segmented armor of the hobgoblin auxiliary-corps, dyed in the muted clan-colors of his tribe so the formation looks like a single shifting mass of dust and shadow at a distance. His face is the typical hobgoblin grimace — filed teeth, restrained fury, the long-cultivated expression of a soldier who has decided that the world is going to be one arrow shorter than it used to be by the end of his day's work. His bow is a recurved horn-and-sinew composite of the steppe-tradition, the same design that has served the hobgoblin clans for ten generations — short enough to be drawn from a kneeling stance, powerful enough to punch through plate at three hundred paces, accurate enough to put a shaft through the visor-slit of a southern knight if the archer feels the day requires it. His quiver is full. His draw is steady. His next target is already chosen. The captain at the head of the formation gives the signal for the next volley. The musician howls the timing signal. The bannerman holds the standard high enough that the entire formation can see it from any pose. And the arrows fly in unison — the dark thunderhead of a Marduk volley that has been the last sound a thousand southern kingdoms ever heard.
