Ask a question

They do not march. They do not chant. They do not raise their weapons until the priest gives the sign — and then everything happens at once, and the line in front of them stops being a line. The Marduk Cultists are the fanatic infantry of the Cult of Marduk — the inner-circle worshippers of the bull-god, the warriors who have given up the formal rank of the regular Marduk army for something older, darker, and considerably less polite. They are not regular infantry. They are not auxiliary infantry. They are the consecrated — the chaos-dwarven faithful who have taken the ritual oaths in the deep temples, who have stood in the bull-blood at the altar-stones, who have woken up the next morning with the brand of Marduk burned into their forearms and the certain knowledge that their lives now belong to something larger than themselves. Each cultist wears the ritual hoods and dark robes of the inner order, his face half-hidden under the cowl, the segmented armor of his clan underneath the cloth dyed in the soot-and-blood colors of the cult. His weapon is the heavy two-handed gear of the religious warrior-caste — a great-spear, a great-axe, or a great-mace, depending on the rite his particular sect favors — held with the loose grip of a man who has used it in ceremony as often as he has used it in war. The Captain at the head of the formation carries the high standard of the inner cult. The Musician carries the ritual horn whose voice has been calibrated through centuries of priestly tuning to carry the prayers of Marduk across an open battlefield. The Bannerman carries the banner of the chosen, stitched in the iron-thread of the temple looms, marked with the cuneiform names of every cultist who has fallen in the bull-god's service. And when the priest gives the sign — when the moment of consecrated violence has arrived — the cultists move as one. Not the disciplined cadence of regular infantry. Something else. Something that the surviving witnesses of southern campaigns have described, in their letters home, as "a sound like the earth deciding to clear its throat."
