Ask a question
The wheels turn slowly. The brazen ram drags forward. The cursed runes along its sides glow with the low ember-light of metal that has been heated and never permitted to cool. The southern scouts who report its arrival to their captains use the phrase "rolling fortress" because they cannot find a more accurate one.
The Blazing Icon of Marduk is the icon-engine of the Sons of Marduk artillery train — a rolling fortress on wheels, a war-machine large enough to break a gate by simply moving through it, a religious-military object whose function is half-siege-engine and half-altar-of-Marduk. The chaos-dwarven smiths spent two years forging it. The cult priesthood spent another year consecrating it. By the time it left the deep workshops of the Marduk forge-temples, it had stopped being a piece of equipment and started being something the army marches with rather than something the army uses. The icon itself rides at the front of the engine — a massive brass plate stamped with the cuneiform name of Marduk, set into a heavy timber-and-iron frame that doubles as a brazen ram of the kind the old Mesopotamian sieges used to crack city walls. From the turret-mounted positions along the sides and rear, the engine vents flame — the patient flame of Marduk, channeled through brass nozzles and runic ducts, used to clear the path ahead and discourage enemy infantry from getting within charge-range of the wheels. The five Hobgoblin crew operate it from concealed positions inside and around the engine: one drives the front pair of wheels with the reins-system the chaos-dwarves designed, two manage the flame-vents and torches along the flanks, two stand ready with the long-handled tools needed to keep the ram aligned and the icon-plate clean of debris during the long advance. The crew are not the heroes. The Icon is the hero. Every soldier in the Sons of Marduk knows it. And the southern kingdoms have started referring to it, in the captured intelligence reports the Marduk priesthood routinely receives, as the engine that ended their cities.
