The first shot is the announcement. The second shot is the demonstration. The third shot is the proof. And by the time the southern captains have understood that a chaos-dwarven cannon-line has opened up on their position, the gun-crew is already loading the fourth.
The Sons of Marduk Cannon is the heavy artillery of the chaos-dwarven army — a Mesopotamian-influenced gunpowder piece forged in the deep fire-pits of the Marduk smithies, served by a three-man crew of chaos-dwarven artillerists who have spent the better part of their working lives learning the precise relationship between charge, elevation, and the kind of damage their gun produces at various ranges. The cannon itself is engraved with the abyssal runes of the cult, the cuneiform script of the Marduk priesthood worked into the brass barrel-bands and the iron carriage-frame, the draconic-wing motif of the cult worked into the trail-spades and the barrel-mantlet. It is not a clean weapon. The chaos-dwarves do not value clean weapons. The cannon is darkened with the residue of countless campaigns, the muzzle blackened with carbon, the wood of the carriage stained with the spilled oil and the spilled blood of decades of constant use. The three crew operate it with the silent efficiency of men who have done this work for so long that words are no longer necessary between them. One handles the loading — the powder-charge, the wadding, the iron ball or canister-shot or whatever the day's tactical situation requires. One handles the aiming — the elevation-screws, the windage adjustments, the long careful sighting along the barrel. One handles the firing — the linstock, the slow match, the timing. They wear the segmented armor and ritual robes of the chaos-dwarven artillery-corps, their beards braided in the formal artillerist's three-strand pattern, their faces darkened with the soot of constant firing. And the cannon goes off — and the southern line learns, again, what the consequences are of attempting to march against a Marduk army across open ground.
