The southern soldiers know the sound of a longbow. They know the sound of a crossbow. They are still learning the sound of a Marduk gun-line, and the learning curve has so far been measured in cities lost rather than in lessons received.
The Sons of Marduk Shooters are the ranged gunpowder infantry of the chaos-dwarven army — the gun-line, the powder-corps, the soldiers the Marduk forge-temples have been training for the better part of three centuries to handle the new weapons the priesthood's smithies developed when the old crossbow technology stopped being sufficient. They wear the segmented armor and ritual robes of the chaos-dwarven shooter-corps, modeled in the Ottoman-janissary aesthetic that the priesthood adopted when the design committee selected gunpowder as the way forward. Their helmets are taller, more elaborate than the regular Marduk Warriors' — fitted with the small visor that protects the eyes from powder-flash. Their beards are braided in the gunner's two-strand pattern, marked with the brass rings that record the number of campaigns they have served with the new weapons. Their faces are darkened with the soot of constant firing-drill, their hands and forearms calloused from decades of handling powder, fuse, ramrod, and reload. The Blunderbuss variant carries the short, heavy-barreled close-range weapon — a brass-fluted firearm with a flared muzzle that throws a spray of shot at point-blank ranges, designed to break charges and clear narrow lanes of approach. The Jezail variant carries the long-barreled rifle — a Mesopotamian-Ottoman-influenced precision weapon with the elegant curved stock and the long sighting-rib of the marksman tradition, designed to pick off enemy officers, war-beasts, and other high-value targets at extended ranges. The Captain at the head of the formation carries the standard of the shooter-corps. The Musician carries the gunner's horn, whose tone is calibrated to coordinate volley-fire across the line. The Bannerman holds the standard of the regiment. And the gun-line fires — and the southern enemies discover, again, that the rules of war the chaos-dwarves play by are no longer the rules the rest of the continent has agreed to follow.
