The Ghost Swarms are the spectral infantry of the Spectres of transilvanya — the restless dead of the old crypts, the souls who refused the long sleep, the things that drift between the gravestones at the hour when the night-watchman has decided to look the other way. They are not individuals. They do not move as individuals. They move as a swarm — a low coherent fog of overlapping spectral forms, each ghost shifting through the others, the entire cluster advancing across the cemetery floor with the slow inevitability of a tide coming in. Some have weapons — rusted ceremonial blades from the funerary rites that buried them. Some have hands — long pale things that reach across the boundary of the swarm-cluster as if testing the air for the warmth of living flesh. Some have faces — the ones that still remember being people, the ones that have not yet given up on the long-forgotten projects of their mortal lives. And some have only eyes — the simplest, oldest expression of the dead, watching from the swarm with the patient hunger of things that have nothing else to do and all the time in the universe to do it. The sculptural challenge of capturing this kind of subject in resin is significant — thin elements have to be balanced against printability, ghostly flow has to be balanced against the structural needs of multi-part assembly, the entire cluster has to read as a single coherent unit rather than a pile of separate figures — and Highlands Miniatures has solved every one of those challenges. The result is a swarm unit that arrives looking exactly like what the southern grave-robbers describe in their final letters home: a low fog, with eyes, that has decided to stop being a fog.
