The Bat Swarms are the airborne scouts and harassing infantry of the Spectres of Transilvanya — the lesser children of the crypt, the bound familiars of the Vampire Counts and the patient eyes of every cathedral-bell-tower the old gothic kingdoms have ever stopped using. They are not the dire bats. They are not the giant fanged servants of the bloodline. They are the swarm — the small, fast, dense cluster of leathery wings and pale eyes and teeth too sharp for the size of the body they grow from, the cluster of dozens that moves as a single intelligence and reports back to whichever vampire-lord currently holds the leash. Each Swarm base is a multi-figure cluster of overlapping bat forms — wings spread mid-flight, bodies twisting around each other, the entire mass of them rising from the bases with the wrong kind of buoyancy that a thing this dense should not possess. Some carry the bloodred eye-shine of the Transilvanya bloodline. Some show the lean hunger of the recently-fed predator. Some have the small dripping fangs of the swarm-elder, the bats that have lived longest and have learned to coordinate the cluster's movement most efficiently. They are deployed as harassment, as scouting, as the first taste an enemy army gets of what is about to come through the cathedral doors behind them. The southern soldiers who have faced Bat Swarms in the field have learned to recognize the sound — a low frequency wing-noise just below the threshold of hearing — and to recognize what the sound means: the Vampire Lord knows you are here, and the Vampire Lord has already decided what is going to happen next.
