The Giant Bats are what arrives after the warning — the elder children of the vampire-bloodline, the wingspan you measure not in inches but in arm's-lengths, the predators the Vampire Lord raises in the deep cathedral towers when the swarm-tier is no longer sufficient for the work at hand.The Giant Bats of Transilvanya are the dire-tier aerial cavalry of the Spectres — the bound flying servants of the Vampire Counts, bred over generations in the high-altitude breeding-roosts of the gothic kingdoms, fed on the blood-tribute the bloodline collects from its subjects, raised to a size and ferocity that the southern bestiaries refuse to formally acknowledge because the formal acknowledgement would require them to update their tactical doctrine. Each Giant Bat stands roughly the size of a small wolf — wings extended in flight that cast a shadow large enough to darken a battlefield-tile when they pass overhead, jaws large enough to take a man's arm at the shoulder, eyes the bloodred of the Transilvanya bloodline catching the moonlight as they descend. They wear nothing — no armor, no harness, no rider. They do not need to. They are the weapon themselves. Their wings are leathery, scarred from the gothic skies and the constant nocturnal flying. Their fangs are honed to the needle-points of the predator that has stopped eating ordinary prey because the Vampire Lord has trained them to require warmer meals. Their claws are forged-iron sharp, designed by selective breeding to grip and tear and carry away whatever single target the Vampire Lord has indicated through the silent bond he shares with them. They are deployed as terror, as airborne support, as the part of the army that arrives from above and decides the fates of the soldiers below before the soldiers below have a chance to understand what has happened.
